What is the Mediterranean Diet?

The Mediterranean diet has become very popular in recent years mostly because of its health benefits. Studies indicate that the diet can help improve heart health and reduce the risk of cognitive decline.  In addition to these health benefits, many choose to follow the Mediterranean diet for weight loss.  Here are some of the basic components of the Mediterranean diet:

  • Emphasizes healthy oils, like olive oil, which is high in monounsaturated fat, and fish, which contains healthy omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Encourages modest red wine consumption, which has been found to be heart healthy because of a compound called resveratrol.
  • The diet is rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and beans. There is less focus on poultry, eggs and yogurt, and foods like red meat and sweets are only consumed occasionally (if at all).
