Have you heard of the Healthy Kids Today Prevent Cancer Tomorrow Campaign?  The American Institute for Cancer Research, in conjunction with Superkids Nutrition, has started this campaign with the belief that “making simple changes, like eating healthy foods and moving more each day, has the power to give your children a healthier future.”  As part of the initiative, individuals can download toolkits that make it easy for parents and fun for kids to make these simple changes for better health, as well as submit a pledge as an official commitment to making the changes.
Goals of the campaign include:

  • Teaching children to enjoy and explore food that protect their health and fight cancer: vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans.

  • Help children make healthier food choices in an environment full of nutrition-poor foods that are heavily marketed and readily available to children.

  • Make healthy choices fun through cooking and educational activities children love.

To help promote this important endeavor, the American Institute for Cancer Research recently hosted a Twitter chat featuring Superkids Nutrition founder Melissa Halas-Liang, MA, RD, CDE (@FitNutrition).  The focus of this chat, which involved several dietitians and parents, was easy ways parents can entice kids to make healthy food choices and get more active every day.  Suggestions ranged from having kids help cook family meals to trying new herbs and spices to helping in the vegetable garden.  Even the pickiest of eaters can be tempted to enjoy healthier foods more often with tips like these.
